Widening Access to Careers in Community Healthcare (WATCCH) 2023

Calling all medical students!

Would you like to be a WATCCH student mentor or join the WATCCH Committee?

Or both?

WATCCH is a widening participation initiative aimed at Year 12 students who are interested in a career in healthcare. The programme is run by the Medical Education Innovation & Research Centre.

The programme includes work experience in primary care and a series of workshops on a range of healthcare careers and admissions help, including tips on personal statements and interviews. All WATCCH students receive mentoring from an Imperial College student mentor. This is where we need your support!

What does mentoring involve?

There will be four workshops within WATCCH this year, which will be a mix of in-person and online sessions. As a mentor, you would support students within the workshops and via an online mentoring platform. You will be expected to attend all the workshops, dates of them are: –

– Wednesday 26th July – Welcome day in-person at Charing Cross Campus (all day)

– Saturday 2nd September – Post placement workshop in-person at Charing Cross Campus (half day)

– Saturday 30th September – Personal statement clinic online (half day)

– Saturday 11th November – Mock interviews in-person at Charing Cross campus (half day)

If you are unable to attend any of these dates, please notify us in your application.

You will receive training in safeguarding and coaching. On completion of the programme, you will receive a certificate outlining your contribution to the scheme. This is an excellent way to use your experience and skills to support prospective students, whilst also building your ever-growing portfolio.

What does a committee role involve?

Committee roles include student lead, resource lead, communications officer and general committee member. For more information about each of the roles, please see the online form.

The committee is made up of a smaller group of students, who, alongside mentoring, the committee is committed to taking on a leadership role in the development and delivery of the workshops.

How to apply?

To apply, please fill out the online form. If you would like to take on a leadership role as part of the WATCCH committee (in addition to being a mentor), please complete the section outlining which role you would like to apply for and why, as well as any previous relevant experience.

The deadline is 9.00am on Friday 19 May 2023

We will get back to you by the end of June 2023 with further information, and confirmation of committee role allocations.

Finally, should you have any questions, please contact the WATCCH team: watcch@imperial.ac.uk
