The Faculty of the History and Philosophy of Medicine and Pharmacy was established as an independent academic charity in 1959 by the Society of Apothecaries. Membership is open to any individuals or organisations with an interest in this specialist field.

The Faculty offers courses in the history of medicine, the philosophy of medicine and healthcare, and the history of pharmacy. Courses lasting an academic year can lead to a Diploma examination, or delegates can attend purely for interest. Short courses are currently run in all three subject areas.

The Faculty also runs a series of Eponymous Lectures given by expert speakers on a range of topics including; Occasional one day symposia, book launches and events complement these regular lectures.

The Faculty also appoints Apothecary Lecturers List to medical schools and other institutions, supporting the teaching of medical history and philosophy across the country and beyond.

The Faculty is run by a full-time Faculty Manager, Maria Ferran, with an elected Executive Committee who meet 4 times a year to set policy, strategy and the programme. The Faculty’s Governing Body is the Court of Assistants of the Society of Apothecaries.
