Boat Club

The Imperial College School of Medicine Boat Club (ICSMBC) was formed in 1997 as three of the most successful medical rowing clubs in London merged. We row from the University of London boathouse in Chiswick, predominantly in eights and fours, yet also go out in a pair and a scull. With a total of around 100 members, our club comprises eight boats that regularly train and race..We compete within the United Hospital (UH) competitions against the other London medical schools as well as further afield in various British Rowing events such as the Cambridge Winter Head. And the Head of the River Race – with 420 national and international crews it is one of the biggest rowing races in the world. Our club is proud to always be the loudest when it comes to supporting our racing crews, be it from the boat house for the sprint races or from Hammersmith bridge in the Head season. Some of the achievements of the 2010/11 season include the novice boys’ first VIII triple-bump in the UH Bumps race – a very rare and prestigious success; and both the senior men’s crews defending their position as top UH crews by finishing the Head of the River Race as the fastest UH first and second crews. The Senior Women’s crews have had yet again a very successful year with the first VIII taking medals away from the winter sprint races and UH head and the Women’s second VIII winning the Allom cup sprints races.

We train on Wednesday afternoons and on Saturday for the girls or Sunday for the boys. Individual crews can choose to hold extra outings or as much land training as they wish. We accommodate crews that train most days, as well as those that only want to row on Wednesday and at the weekend.

ICSMBC has become known for combining impressive performance on the water with memorable social events off it. We have a hectic schedule of formal dinners, pub crawls and nights out throughout the year. Aside of weekly sports nights and UH boat club events, the highlights of our social calendar are our Summer and Christmas dinners and of course our annual tour to Leuven, Belgium, which is guaranteed to produce memories you will never forget.

ICSMBC caters for rowers of all levels of experience and ability, whether you are a total beginner or made in the image of Sir Steve! We aim to row to a high level, whilst fitting training around our studies and social activities. Most new members will have never rowed before and will be part of a boys or girls novice squad, with a dedicated captain from an older year. Their sole purpose in life is that you get the most of what the boat club has to offer, and to make your rowing experience unforgettable. Coxing is also a huge part of the sport of rowing and so if you are interested in enthusiastically shouting at rowers please contact Laura and we will teach you all we know!
