Paid opportunity to create a more inclusive community at Imperial

There can be many reasons why some students may not feel a real sense of belonging at Imperial and we need to understand these and change, if we are to become a truly welcoming and inclusive university for everyone. The Faculties of Medicine and Natural Sciences are joining forces in an exciting new project in which we hope to create a more equal and inclusive sense of community amongst our students. The project has been planned as a collaboration between students and staff and is being funded by a grant from the President’s Learning and Teaching Fund. The project is being driven forward by Prof Sue Smith and Dr Ana Baptista from the Medical Education Development Unit in FoM, and Prof John Seddon from FoNS.

In order to start the work, we need to recruit a small team of undergraduate students from FoM and FoNS to work together over the summer to scope out the nature of the challenges we need to overcome, and possible solutions to the issues we need to address. We would also like our student partners to co-create some possible interventions, which might help students feel more integrated into the College.

We are looking for undergraduate students in any year of their programmes in either FoNS or FoM who are passionate about creating a more equal and inclusive society and who are not afraid to tell us what we need to do better. The initial team of co-creators need to be reliable team players who are good at thinking of creative solutions to complicated problems. They need to be able to commit 6 hours per week for a minimum of 4 weeks and up to 6 weeks, starting later this month. Payment will be at the rate of £15.00 per hour.

If this sounds like you, please get in touch by writing to sue.smith@imperial.ac.uk with your name and what department you are studying in. We need to know this, so we can recruit a spread of individuals from across the various departments in FoNS. If you are in FoM, please indicate if you are on the MBBS or BMB programme. Please send a 250 word summary explaining a) why you are interested in this role, and b) what you will be able to bring to this project. The closing date for applications will be 3rd August 2020 at midday.
