What is DYSTONIA?

Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder characterised by involuntary and sustained muscle spasms which cause abnormal movements and postures.Dystonia is debilitating and painful. It can be generalised, affecting the whole of the body, or focal – affecting part of the body such as the jaw, tongue or mouth, head and neck, arms and hands, or the muscles around the eye.

Dystonia in children can be particularly cruel, and is often progressive. It can leave a child with an able mind in a seriously disabled and contorted body, sometimes unable to communicate.

Registration and abstract submission are now open for Skin School 2014, a national dermatology and plastic surgery conference for medical students and trainee doctors to be held at Osler House, John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, on 26th September 2014.
This one day conference is a mix of practical surgical skills sessions and talks both career specific and of interest from leading consultants in both specialities.

There will also be an opportunity for selected delegates to present a poster on a topic related to dermatology or plastic surgery and for the authors of the best three abstracts to do a short oral presentation at the conference. For these, abstracts must be submitted by 16th August 2014 to skinschool14@gmail.com with the subject ‘[your name] abstract’. If you would only like to be considered for one category of abstract presentation, please make this clear on your email.  Presenting at a national conference such as this provides extra points on applications not only for AFP jobs but also training posts in the future.

To register for the conference, please email skinschool14@gmail.com before 6th September 2014. The cost of the conference is £20 which includes all surgical materials and food and refreshments throughout the day.
